Is Technology Making Us Dumber?

This is an interesting post written by a teenager on her "Fer Sure" blog. Read her post, keeping in mind it's her opinion. After you read it, post your opinion on the topic. Your post should be atleast a paragraph long. Please remember to put your name and period at the top of your post.

Is technology making us dumber?

In today's society, almost every one has a cell phone, or a computer. We have advanced so far with technology since the 1950's when the dream of the Internet started. Looking back through time, it really is amazing to see how far we've come. Have you heard of the new Google Wave? It's a personal communication and collaboration tool, and was announced at the Google I/O conference back in May as the next generation of Internet communications. Now, I won't pretend to understand all the technological explanations on how it works, but in short, Google Wave will allow us to send messages in real time. So, instead of the instant messaging we're used to (where you type your response, hit send, and see it appear in your conversation box), it's live. As in, you see the message, letter by letter as it's being typed, appear. It's amazing! It's due to come out later this year. If you want more info, you can look at the preview by clicking here.

My point is, however, every day it seems, we as a human race are advancing. We're getting smarter, and more capable of developing inventions that almost defy reality. Think about if you were to have a conversation with some one who lived, say, one hundred years ago. If you were to tell them what type of world we live in today, they would probably accuse you of witchcraft, or devil worshiping. We as a race of beings, are capable of almost anything. We've gone to the moon for crying out loud. That was 40 years ago! Humans are getting smarter.

Or are we?

Like I said before, we are developing so many technological advances every day. But is it really helping mankind? Or is it simply dumbing us down and making us lazy? People don't have to do half the work they used to. Everything is automated nowadays, and you can find anything on the Internet. Text messaging allows us to communicate almost instantly. But all these things that make life easier, are really costing us more than what we know. I can honestly say, I don't think I could have survived before this age of technology. I can't remember NOT having a computer in my home. Most people my age would not know how to survive without half the things we take for granted every day. To my older readers, do you remember what it was like doing a report in high school? Breaking out the old encyclopedias, checking out countless books from the library, and then taking days to read through all of it? Now people don't have to go through half the hassle. Quickly Google the subject (yes, I love Google. I use it frequently), and in seconds, you have countless websites that will give you all the information you need.

Technology is making people lazy.

In the 1800s, they used to make young children in elementary school recite the U.S. presidents. Children younger than 13 could name all the presidents, states and capitals. There are few grown adults that can do that now. Think, if you had 10 minutes, and no outside help, could you name all 50 states? Seriously, try it. I tried, and I missed 13. I've always thought I was fairly intelligent. But really, why bother learning it, if I could just look it up online in seconds? Not only are we not learning what was once required, but technology is making people worse spellers. We have tools like spell check, so we never really learn. It's like how teachers always tell us in school, if you cheat, you're only hurting yourself. Well, spell check is kind of cheating.

With text messaging, people shorten words all the time. Like, I can take the sentence, "Oh my God, really, that is totally cool. I have to go, I'll talk to you later though," and write it in half the letters by just typing: "Omg rly thts kool. g2g ttyl tho." Yes, it's usually only used in IMs or texts, but slowly people are forgetting the correct spelling of words. Teachers in today's high schools remind students when they assign reports that this type of writing is unacceptable. Why do they do this? All too often, a lot of people will forget a 'w' on the end of 'know' or they'll put 'cuz' instead of 'because.' I'm not innocent in the matter. I catch myself doing it all the time, just because, yes, I text and IM a lot, and that's how I'm used to writing words. But it's a horrible habit that today's generation needs to get out of. We're slowly killing the English language. Slowly, even though we're discovering new things, and inventing amazing creations, the human race as a whole is getting less intelligent. I know above I stated that we're getting smarter, but are we really? Or is technology making us lazy?

I love the Internet, cell phones, Mp3 players, gaming systems, and everything that makes life more enjoyable, and less of a hassle. I'm proud to live in the 2000s, where we're on the verge of curing cancer, and living in space, and I'll never deny that. I love technology. But I don't love what it's made us become. Maybe, though, we should start thinking more about it. We don't have to let technology reduce us to brainless twits. The choice is ours.

  2. I completely agree with what she is saying because it's logical. Sure we're developing new advanced equipment, but it's only helping us become more lazy. It's true how we use spell check and google daily. Why should we remember certain things when we could just google it? In the end, I do feel technology is making us somewhat dumber.

I wouldn't say that technology is making us dumber. It's actually making us smarter. However, it is also making us very lazy. Many things that can be done by hand can now be done through technology. I don't think that technology is making us dumber.

  6. Technology isnt making us dummer it is helping us out with things we need or things we would like to serch for. It also gets things done faster maybe...

  7. I dont agree that technology is making us dumber. Just because we rely on technology doesn't mean we are becoming dumber. I do agree that its making us lazy but not dumb. There's not enough proof that technology is making humas dumber.

Ya, I can defiantly see this happining. We as a race are advancing so much in technolgy, but are realying so much on these machines that were starting to become lazier everyday. Nowadays people don't have to do anything because everything is handed to them on a robotic platter. However, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, ok, it is I lied, but there there's nothing we can do but go with the flow.

You're right, technology does make things faster. I understand where you're coming from. However, I still do feel that technology makes us dumber. We're too dependent on it.

  10. I agree with everything that she said. Technology is making us forget everything. Why do we need to memorize things when we can just Google it? People are less smart now because people are getting lazy and just looking things up on the internet. She makes a good point when she said how people use text and im language more now than ever. So I believe that technology is making lazy and dumb

  11. I agree and dont agree. I agree that technology is making us lazy and dumb. But technology is now usefull for homework and school.Yea so do actually need technology now.

I agree with you since people now days are becoming lazier since all they have to do is just go to a computer and type in what they want. They then just find what they need and they are done. I don't think they could last if they had to do it the old way of going to the library and checking out the books. Then after that they still have to read it all to find out what information they need. That is why I agree with you.

  13. I agree with you, now people are feeling lazier to type the complete word. Like me, it happens sometimes when im texting a friend. And yes I do believe that technology is making us dumber. But it is faster, than doing it the old way going to the library and reading the whole book or writing a whole book report. That's why I think people are getting lazier. So I agree.

I agree with you since technology is making us lazier since we just have to go sit down at a computer and look up what we need. We do not have to go to a library and carry and then still have to read all of these books. That is why technology is making us lazier.

Yeah that is pretty much true. Its is making us dumber to but it also helps us to.

i agree because we now spend most of our time on the computer getting things the easy way, instead of actually learning the things. people also miss spell words because they shorten them all the time in text messeges.

  17. I agree with her because technoligy now is easier and people are forgetting how to do stuff the old fashoin way.

A well I beleive that technology is make some of us smarter. When other people are getting dump and lazy. The lazy people are the one's who use the Internet for games, IM'S or more. The smart people are the people who use the Internet for good like research and more!

  19. i agree sice they more new technology comig out is making us humas more laziers. And techonology i s makikng our lifes easier and thats way we become more lazier sice it is more simple for us to do things now. and it is making us a little bit more dumers and thats way i agree with you.

Your right, people now in days use technology to get a report down faster. They are getting lazy to go to the library and cheching out a book and reading the whole book. That's why I agree with you.

Technology is important though. It helps us with the stuff that we can't do the old fashion way. Like traveling to far places. This would be much harder to do without technology.

I agree with this blog. I think its not making us dummber but a little lazier. Its helping us text faster. With this its making everything easy for us and i like it. :)

  24. @gomezedy65your wrong technoligy is making people dumm and lazier because back then their was no technoligy and they use to do stuff way harder.

Yes it does helps us out but not everything that is on the internet is 100% true. That is why we cant always rely on the internet

  26. Technology is making us more advanced. Although technology is somewhat making us lazy and dumber. In the old days, people would do their work by hand and they would understand it and become smarter. Now people could just go on the internet and copy it off a website, and they really didnt learn anything. So i think that technology is making us dumber.

  27. I agree with what she is saying. I think that people are becoming lazy because people don't go outside to play. Now people stay in their house and watch television or play video games. Another thing is that people are not playing sports they rather stay home and use the internet.

well i agree too we do seem to get lazy and have technology do things for us but i would also rather have somthing be done faster then to take hours to do.

come on we are not getting dumber we are just smart enough to use technology so it makes things easier for us:).We are gettin lazier though.

  30. I do not agree at all. Technology is only helping the world. Its the people that take it for granted that are being harmed by it. Some people text using proper english and grammer. Some people still live in the woods. There were people in the 1800s that didnt do things right, just like there are people today that are insanly smart, like bill gates or sean payton. I think this person is to to worried and needs to relax.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree with her as well even though we are smart enough to make this technology we end up relying on it too much. For instance, writing an essay people now a days will go straight for a computer and correct it with spell check rather than writing and correcting it themselves. People are becoming more lazy because of the technology we are creating. Mankind will one day regret being so lazy and so dependent on technology.

True. If you went out and chose 1,000 people, about 990 wouldn't be able to go to the library and read an entire set of encyclopedias for a research paper. It is really is a shame our society has come to this.

Yes Edwin but some people use the internet for good thing not just for messages or game. come on now edwin

False. Technology is making us dumber because people could just go on the internet and copy something down. Do you really think they are really gonna learn??
You dont even know if i copied this.....

I completely agree with her because its true. The fact that she brought up about the teachers when they say: "If you cheat, your only hurting yourselves". That is completely true. I believe profoundly in that fact, and i also believe in how we write "c" instead of "see", "u" instead of "you" or of "2" instead of "to". Thats so true. I think anyone will agree to it. Not just me.

I agree that technology is making us lazy. But I would disagree that it's making us dumb. Spellcheck is not making us dumb. I don't think there's a better way to learning something than to just know the answer.

It's true about this generation not being the best spellers. Text messaging is all about abbreviationa and not any proper punctuation. For example - lmao ur 2 fUnNy!!!

I do agree with your point of view that not all people are abusing the technology. People are in control of what they do so not all people will become lazy by using technology, but I still think most people will, because most people try to find the easy way out of things.

well to me it makes things faster and if you did copy it thats bad cause its plagirism but i know you took the time to write it so ha i win :)

I agree with your comment. This generation of kids are not as good at spelling as our parents. My parents were raised to look up words in a dictionary manually, not with a spell checker. Also text messaging is all done in abbreviations, inproper punctuation & grammer. For example, lmao, u r 2funny...

  48. I feel that technology has positive and negative results on us. The positives are how advanced we've become compared to my grandparent's generation. Yet, my grandparent's can spell any word, while I depend on spell check through the computer. My grandparent's seem to be more creative in coming up with fun things to do, while I like to hang out indoors and play with all my technology. The worse thing that could ever happen to me is my parents taking away my tech to ground me!
