Internet Addiction

According to recent studies, internet addiction is a growing problem among teenagers. Click on the following links and read the articles about internet addiction. After you read the articles, look over the signs of internet addiction, do any of these apply to you? Do you think they could be representative of a real problem, or is this all nonsense?
Leave a PARAGRAPH long post about internet addiction: do you agree or disagree that it is a problem? Most of your posts lately have been lacking any real critical thinking skills, so try to step it up this time... It will be much more difficult to get full points this time. :) Don't forget to leave a reply as well (remember: these should also show some critical thinking skills) Here are the links:

Signs of Internet Addiction

Dr. Kimberly Young has likened Internet addiction to addictive syndromes similar to impulse-control disorders on the Axis I Scale of the DSM. She developed the Internet Addiction Diagnostic Questionnaire (IADQ) to diagnose the disorder. Meeting five of the following symptoms were considered necessary to be diagnosed.

1. Do you feel preoccupied with the Internet (think about previous online activity or anticipate next online session)?
2. Do you feel the need to use the Internet with increasing amounts of time in order to achieve satisfaction?
3. Have you repeatedly made unsuccessful efforts to control, cut back, or stop Internet use?
4. Do you feel restless, moody, depressed, or irritable when attempting to cut down or stop Internet use?
5. Do you stay online longer than originally intended?
6. Have you jeopardized or risked the loss of significant relationship, job, educational or career opportunity because of the Internet?
7. Have you lied to family members, therapist, or others to conceal the extent of involvement with the Internet?
8. Do you use the Internet as a way of escaping from problems or of relieving a dysphoric mood (e.g., feelings of helplessness, guilt, anxiety, depression)?

Other Symptoms Include:

• Failed attempts to control behavior
• Heightened sense of euphoria while involved in computer and Internet activities
• Neglecting friends and family
• Neglecting sleep to stay online
• Being dishonest with others
• Feeling guilty, ashamed, anxious, or depressed as a result of online behavior
• Physical changes such as weight gain or loss, backaches, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome
• Withdrawing from other pleasurable activities

  2. I think a lot of teens are getting addicted to the internet. They should be spending more time doing other activities rather than being infront of the monitor all day.

  3. I think is true because some kids just spend too much time in the internet. I think some kids are getting addiction because their too much good stuff to see or to play.

  5. Yes there is internet addiction in the world. If you dont notice everyone uses the internet whenever possible and they stay on for hours. Also many kids who have computer classes dont even pay attenstion some surf the web or play games during the whole class time.

  6. From all these signs none apply to me. I would never go to such an extreme just to be on the Internet. There is some days where you stay on the Internet longer than other days but not the extreme where you like skip dinner or something dumb like that. I think that this is a serious problem and parents should try and help their kids out.

  7. I agree, there is a problem with teenagers having internet addiction. There are too many people with internet addiction that should get help. I try not to stay on the internet that long so I wont get addicted. If you answered yes to most of the questions of the symptoms then you should get help.

  8. I think it's funny that guys are more likely to be addicted to the internet when girls are stereotyped as being "myspace freaks." Personally I feel that developing an addiction to the internet is odd. They're probably socially awkward and that itself is a problem, not the internet.

I agree with her. Many of these things that are going on arent only happening to other people but also ourselves.

I disagree about what the reasearch says. I believe that some teens have control over the time that they are on the computer. I control my time but now I don't really go on. I also think that parnet should let there teen there on the computer because they are do something. Teens that use there comupter a lot are off the streets and are not using drug!!

I agree because more and more kids are spending time talking to their friends instead of their families or getting out of the house. Instead of meeting up with friends to talk you could just IM them.

  12. It is true there are a lot of internet addicts in the world. The need to start spending less time on the web and need to start spending more time in the real world. I agree with the articles on internet addiction.

  15. After reading the two articles, I realize that in the 21st century there is a problem with internet addiction. People, kids in general do not have to interface with others anymore like in the past, before the internet became popular. The internet is the new quick & easy way to communicate and another way to entertain oneself. I have a lot of mixed feelings about internet. I feel people & parents need to limit the time spent on the internet. You could limit it to an hour a day, and have enough self control/discipline to stick with the hour.

I think is true because they watch what other people are doing.

  17. Yes, I agree a lot of people are addicted to the Internet. It is not only guys but girls also. Girls spend just about the same amount of time or maybe longer on the Internet as guys do.

  18. None of the signs apply to me. Going all crazy over the internet is pretty dumb. Skipping family time or with your friends just to play or beat a high score that is serious. Teens are beconing addicted to the internet and lazy. Parents should do something about it.

It is true that they have a lot of interesting sites on the internet, but people still need to pace themselves while using them. If they don't they can get various health problems from not being active, so they need to go on for less hours.

  22. i agree and disagree because is actually making us dumer but is helping us a lot in many stff in todays days. Sometimes we are learnig from technology too.

  26. I can see why more teens are getting addicted to the internet. But, just because some people spend a few hours a day on the internet, doesn't mean that they're addicted. I am on the internet a lot but not enough to say im addicted because I spend maybe 3hrs max a day on the internet. It is still possible to have fun on the internet and still have time to do other offline things that are fun.

I personally use the Internet for my homework, e-mails, or stuff like that but to loose time not all. I just use it for those things. Or sometimes I use it to look for things that I am having trouble with. Seriously I think the Internte is a waste of time and it could also mess up your brain it like brain-wahes you.

  28. @Lily Yes, I agree with you. once someone gets on the internet they pretty much can't get off.

  31. I agree with what they say. I believe that certain teenagers are addicted to the internet and never get off. People need to get a hold of reality instead of being a lazy butt. These articles are right.

  36. ..This is Grant Padilla's reply...i totally agree with this person's comment...Parents have a huge responsibility in monitoring the time spent on the internet. The parent's are probably doing the same thing as their children!

    ReplyDelete
  37. i agree with the internet. the enternet is waste of time parenct also have a sence feeling about responsibitiy in monitoring the all the time spendding on the internet. what i do is do my homework or find stuff wat i need or don't understand.

  38. @syazkin
I agree with you. I also tend to get bored after about and hour. Also, if you use your free time using the internet instead of going outside then you might have a problem.

i agree with the internet says is true. its just giving us another reason to stay home and not go outside. my friends are also on there myspace like hello do something else for once but what can you do.

  40. I agree with you. Being addicted to the internet is weird. Internet addicts should get some help before their addiction gets much worse.

i agree with you. its true because my friends are always on there myspace and checking it everyday. my friends should have something else to do instead of going on there myspace thats what internet does to you it gets you addicted to it.

  42. I think is true because some kids just spending too much time in the internet. I think some kids are getting addicted and it’s not good. Someone needs to get these kinds of people outside so they can enjoy the small things in life, like a summer breeze of the ocean. Not just a computer screen.
